Viral Sun Bears In Ragunan Thin, Management: Our Treatment According To Standards

Public Relations of Ragunan Wildlife Park (TMR), Wahyudi Bambang, ensures that all animals in TMR receive treatment according to animal welfare standards. They are routinely checked for health by the medical team.

This was conveyed by him in response to a viral video showing a sun bear at the TMR in a thin condition. The one who uploaded it was @mongabay.id.

"Regarding a sun bear named Buje, he is currently 20 years old and the medical team has carried out a general check-up routine on May 9, 2025," Wahyudi told reporters in a written statement, Saturday, August 23.

From the results of the examination, Buje is said to be in good health even though he is old. His weight reaches 85 kilograms and is active.

"We also need to inform you that the ideal weight of the sun bear animal according to the reference book Zoo and Wild Mammal Formulary is 50-73 kilograms," he said.

Even so, Wahyudi opened a room for discussion on the care of TMR animals. "You can visit again and meet with animal nurses, curators of animals and education teams," he said.

"We will be happy to accept constructive criticism and suggestions and help us to improve animal welfare at TMR," Wahyudi continued.

In addition, Wahyudi also mentioned the angle for shooting in the viral video. "From above, it looks small," he said.

In the video uploaded by monogabay.id, it is stated that a bear in TMR has become the center of public attention after the recording shows his body looks thin and his behavior is confused.

"Ragunan Zoo is one of the largest conservation facilities in Indonesia, accommodating more than 2,000 animals from hundreds of species. The issue of animal welfare in zoos is often a public topic of discussion, especially when documentation appears that the condition of animals is considered not ideal. This case adds to the list of events that highlight the transparency of animal management in public spaces," wrote Mongabay.id.
