BMKG Warns Of Potential Strong Winds, Thunderstorms, And Rob Floods In A Number Of Areas Today
JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminded the public to be aware of the potential for strong winds, lightning rain, high sea waves, and tidal flooding in a number of areas on Friday, August 22.
BMKG forecaster Maria Claudiana in an online broadcast that was followed in Jakarta, Friday, said that the potential for tidal flooding could occur on the coasts of North Sumatra, Riau, Bangka Belitung, Banten, DKI Jakarta, Central Java, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), South Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, and North Sulawesi.
In addition, light intensity rain is predicted to flush the cities of Medan, Bengkulu, Jambi, Bandung, Semarang, Serang, Denpasar, Pontianak, Palangka Raya, Samarinda, Mamuju, Palu, Ambon, Manokwari, Jayawijaya, Merauke, and Jayapura.
Moderate rain has the potential in Palembang and Pangkalpinang cities.
Meanwhile, the potential for heavy rain accompanied by lightning is predicted to occur in Pekanbaru, Tanjungpinang, Bandar Lampung, Tanjung Selor, Banjarmasin, and Ternate cities.
BMKG also warned of thick to foggy cloudy weather in Banda Aceh, Padang, Jakarta, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Kupang, Mataram, Gorontalo, Manado, Kendari, Makassar, and Sorong, with temperatures ranging from 24 32 degrees Celsius.
The BMKG forecaster explained that atmospheric conditions were influenced by the seeds of tropical cyclone 90W which were observed in the eastern waters of the Philippines with a maximum wind speed of 15 knots or 35 km per hour.
This phenomenon forms convergence from the Sulu Sea to Luzon Island with the potential to grow into a low-category tropical cyclone in the next 24 hours.
The existence of these cyclone seeds is considered capable of increasing the growth of rain clouds while accelerating the surface wind to more than 25 knots.
BMKG found an increase in wind speeds observed in the Gulf of Carpenteraria and Arafura Sea, to South Papua.

This condition has the potential to increase sea waves as high as 2.5 to 4 meters in the Indian Ocean south of Banten to the Indian Ocean south of West Nusa Tenggara.
That way, BMKG urges people in vulnerable areas such as hilly slopes as well as coastal slopes to increase awareness of potential conditions that have the potential for disasters.
