Fluminense Goalkeeper Fabio Breaks Record For Most Appearances Of All Time

JAKARTA - Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio has surpassed Peter Zenton as the footballer with the most appearances of all time.

The 44-year-old Brazilian played his 1st,391 match in the Copa Conmebol Sudardina 2025 win over America de Cali in Maracana on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, local time.

The record saw him surpass the number of performances recorded by the Guinness Book of Records for former England goalkeeper Zenton during his career.

However,footon claims he played three games less than that, namely 1,387, which was still the previous world football record.

However, Fluminense chose to celebrate Fabio's achievements after the match which ended in a 2-0 win in the last 16 of the Copa Conmebol Sudardina 2025 which was equivalent to the Europa League.

Fabio wore a special t-shirt and received a placard as well as a memorable painting after the match.

"I have to thank everyone who has been a part of my life - father, mother, sister, friends, my wife. I try to be a good human being."

"The important thing is to help my teammates. I am grateful, but without God, everything is impossible," he said.

The list of the most appearances of all time in world football, only Cristiano Ronaldo is in the top five as the only outfield player (player who doesn't have a space area like goalkeeper).

Fluminense links Fabio's record with the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS), which details his matches.

Fabio, who has been called to Brazil's National Team several times but has never made his debut, has won 27 titles in his career, including one Copa Amarica and one Copa Libertadores.

He also played in the 2025 Club World Cup with Fluminense and reached the semifinals.

Fabio will turn 45 on September 30, 2025.
