The Copa Conmebol Sudasterina Match Was Canceled Due To Intersumer Clashes
JAKARTA - The Copa Conmebol Sudasterina match between Independiente vs Universidad de Chile was canceled due to clashes between supporters that led to violence.
Libertadores de America Stadium in Avelloneda, Argentina, was evacuated on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, evening local time, after an incident resulted in at least 10 supporters being seriously injured and nearly 90 people being arrested.
"The Comebol Competition and Operations department reports that due to the lack of security guarantees from the home club and local security authorities to ensure the continuity of the match between Independiente (Argentina) and Universidad de Chile (Chile) in the last 16 of Conmebol Sudarelana 2025, the match has been canceled."
"It was also added that, given the club's manual for a similar situation, it has been obeyed, without any improvement, the match has been canceled and this case will be referred to the Conmebol Judiciary Agency for further determination."

Violence erupted in the stands when Universdad de Chile supporters threw projectiles and damaged Independiente's supporters seat.
In a shocking scene, several Independiente supporters moved into the area where the visitors were attacking them with stones and sticks before the police arrived. Supporters of both teams were seen asking for medical help.
When the match was stopped, the score drew 1-1. Lucas Assadi scored for Universidad de Chile in the 11th minute, before being equalized by Santiago Montiel in the 27th minute. The aggregate score 2-1 for the Chile team.
