KAI Will Launch Special Trains For Farmers And Traders, This Is The Goal
JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI continues to present the latest transportation innovations, namely the development of the Special Economic Class Passenger Train (K3) for Farmers and Traders which is currently being modified at the UPT Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng.
KAI Vice President of Public Relations, Anne Purba, explained that the train was designed to help the mobility of farmers and traders, as well as facilitate the transportation of crops and merchandise more freely, safely, and efficiently.
Anne said the idea of this train originated from technical discussions since May 2024 which was later realized through a facility modification process.
The design concept prioritizes wider access and transport space. Seats are installed parallel to the left and right of the train, so that the room is spacious to place agricultural products or merchandise, as well as facilitate movement on the train," Anne said in an official statement, Thursday, August 21.
In addition to changing the seating layout, continued Anne, a number of technical details were also modified to suit this special need. The width of the border door was enlarged from 800 mm to 900 mm, partition barriers and borides were removed to facilitate access to goods, and the number of seats was adjusted to 73 from the previous 106 seats.
"Toilet is still available one unit per train, while the baggage rack is maintained for passenger convenience," he said.
Anne said the Farmer- Trader train was the result of modifications of the business and economic class train which is currently entering the testing stage.
Furthermore, Anne said, the static test had been carried out on August 14 to 15, 2025 at UPT Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng, then followed by a dynamical test on August 15, 2025, with the Surabaya Gubeng route "Lamongan (going back and forth).
"This first phase of testing is carried out by KAI staff. For the next stage of testing, it will involve the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation to obtain certification so that the safety aspect is fully met, before the train can serve the community," he said.
Anne said this train is clear evidence of KAI's commitment to expanding access to public transportation that is inclusive, as well as supporting the wheels of the community's economy.
We want trains to be friends of the journey of farmers and traders. With the right transportation, supply chains will be stronger, business opportunities will be more open, and regional economic activity will be moving," said Anne.
According to Anne, this innovation is also in line with the spirit of Astacita Towards Golden Indonesia 2045.
