US Secretary of State Will Meet with European and Ukrainian Officials to Discuss Ukraine's Security Guarantees
JAKARTA - National security advisers from European countries and Ukraine plan to meet with US Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio on Thursday to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine.
Earlier on Monday (August 21), The Wall Street Journal reported that Rubio would chair the meeting, which would also include NATO officials, to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine.
The US security guarantees include promises of air support for European operations or Washington's intelligence assistance in supporting missions in Ukraine, as well as the deployment of troops in the Black Sea, according to the New York Times.
As reported by ANTARA from Sputnik/RIA Novosti-OANA on Thursday, August 21, the report explained that the meeting also discussed the legal validity of the security guarantees, including whether they require US Congressional approval.
Security guarantees for Ukraine were a major focus of Monday's extensive meeting involving US President Trump, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and several European leaders.
The discussions took place at the White House and focused on the outcome of Trump's meeting with Russian President Putin in Alaska and exploring potential solutions to the ongoing conflict.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the presence of NATO troops on Ukrainian territory, under any flag and in any capacity, including as peacekeepers, is a threat to Russia, and Moscow will not accept it under any circumstances.
