Regarding August 28th Labor Demonstration, Puan Invites People to Convey Aspirations to House of Representatives
JAKARTA - Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Puan Maharani responded to plans for a large-scale demonstration on August 28th. Puan also invited the public to convey their aspirations directly to the DPR building.
"We will see what the public's aspirations are regarding this matter. Those who express these aspirations, God willing, will be received by those here (at the DPR Building)," Puan said at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday, August 21st.
Puan stated that the DPR has a Public Aspiration Agency (BAM) that will accommodate public complaints. The DPR, she said, will officially receive and listen to all public demands.
"The Public Aspiration Agency is here to accommodate objections and complaints, and to hear what aspirations are being raised and why they are happening," Puan said.
Puan explained that the DPR will have open discussions with the public regarding matters that still raise public questions.
"And what those questions haven't been heard openly, what are those questions and how are they addressed?" she said.
Previously, thousands of workers planned to hold another large-scale demonstration on August 28, 2025. The demonstration was related to the current national economic conditions, which were deemed unfair and unjust. These included the purported decline in unemployment and poverty rates, as well as the perceived astronomical salary increase for members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI).
This national demonstration was initiated by the Labor Party, the Coalition of Trade Unions, and the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI). According to Said Iqbal, President of KSPI and President of the Labor Party, the demonstration will be centered in front of the DPR RI or the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.
Approximately 10,000 workers from Karawang, Bekasi, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Jakarta will march towards the center of the capital. Similar actions will also be held simultaneously in various provinces and large industrial cities, including: Serang (Banten), Bandung (West Java), Semarang (Central Java), Surabaya (East Java), Medan (North Sumatra), Banda Aceh (Aceh), Batam (Riau Islands), Bandar Lampung (Lampung), Banjarmasin (South Kalimantan), Pontianak (West Kalimantan), Samarinda (East Kalimantan), Makassar (South Sulawesi), Gorontalo, and various other regions.
