Earthquake Bekasi Magnitude 4.9 Feels In Karawang, 30 Districts Affected

The 4.9 magnitude earthquake centered in Bekasi was felt by the impact in the Karawang Regency, West Java, on Wednesday, August 20, at around 20.00 WIB. Guncangan was felt in 30 sub-districts, with the worst points in three villages in Tegalwaru and Pangkalan sub-districts.

Young Disaster Analyst of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Karawang, Nunung Koswara, explained that the epicenter was about 14 kilometers southeast of Bekasi Regency, precisely in Cintalaksana Village and Kuta Langgeng, Tegalwaru District and Pangkalan.

The earthquake started with a magnitude of 4.9 on a magnitude scale and was felt at the BPBD office. About half an hour later there was a follow-up earthquake with a magnitude of 2.1," he said.

Nunung added that in the Karawang area itself, it can be felt that there are 7 aftershocks.

"Although there were no casualties, the earthquake caused damage to a number of buildings. Reports from the Tegalwaru District Disaster Management Task Force (PB) stated that there were light cracks to rough cracks, as well as many house ceilings falling," he explained.

Nunung added that vibrations were still felt, especially in the Pangkalan sub-district. Until now, the BPBD team is still collecting data and receiving reports from various other sub-districts, including Klari and Ciampel.

"Alhamdulillah, so far there have been no reports of casualties. However, data collection is still ongoing because the potential for damage can increase," said Nunung.
