JAKARTA - Head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), Dadan Hindayana, opened his voice about 44.2 percent of the education budget of IDR 757.8 trillion in 2026 for the Free Nutrition Food (MBG) program.

According to him, the MBG budget does not only come from the function of education, but also from health and other budget posts.

"This Nutrition Agency was only given, asked how much money was needed to eat nutrition under such assumptions, I said Rp335 trillion. Where did it come from, it turned out to be included in two functions of one health, one education," he said in Jakarta, Tuesday, August 19.

"So the total is IDR 335 trillion, which from its health is approximately between IDR 24 trillion or IDR 27 trillion. So it's not IDR 335 trillion from education, that's the total we will use," Dadan continued.

He explained that every year the education budget continues to increase because it is set at least 20 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

With GDP growth of around 5 percent per year, the education budget will automatically increase.

"So it's actually almost impossible not to interfere with what was already there, namely the calculations like this, because the 20 percent increase is always really based on the total GDP. Now our GDP is up 5 percent per year. So the education budget automatically increases. Now the 5 percent increase is not used for operations last year but is allocated to eat nutrition. That's the logic," said Dadan.

Furthermore, Dadan emphasized that the decision regarding the budget allocation policy was entirely in the hands of the President. According to him, President Prabowo Subianto assessed that the relevant MBG program was included in several functions at once, such as education, health, and social.

"But where is the budget policy taken, frankly, the President, who has to answer it. Sometimes he asks "feeding school children part of education or not? Education. Feeding pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers are part of health or not? Health department. Feeding to children and those who are less capable is part of social or not? Social. Yes, then we just combine it," he explained.

In a speech on the 2026 RAPBN Financial Note, President Prabowo Subianto said the education budget was allocated at IDR 757.8 trillion, the largest in Indonesia's history.

The budget is used to improve the welfare and quality of teachers, as well as ensure that education is able to answer the needs of the world of work.
