JAKARTA - Taiwan Insists Its Country Relies On Itself For Its Safety.
JAKARTA - Taiwan insists its country relies on itself for its security. This affirmation is in response to US President Donald Trump's statement claiming Chinese President Xi Jinping promised not to invade Taiwan during Trump's tenure.
Democratic Taiwan for the past five years has faced growing military and political pressure from China that views the separately-ruled island as its territory.
Beijing has never abandoned the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control.
Responding to Trump's statement, Taiwan's Foreign Ministry spokesmanung Kuang-wei, said the government was closely monitoring interactions between senior US and Chinese officials.
"Taiwan's security must be achieved through its own efforts, so that our country has dedicated itself to increasing the ability and resilience of self-defense. Our country will continue to work hard to achieve this,"
The United States is Taiwan's most important international arms support and supplier, although it has no official diplomatic ties.
In addition, there is no defense agreement, so if China attacks, Washington is not obliged to help.
The United States has adhered to its "strategic ambiguity" policy, without explaining whether it will respond to China's attacks on Taiwan militarily.
Trump made a claim about the invasion in an interview with Fox News, ahead of talks in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin over Moscow's war in Ukraine last week.
On Monday, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Taiwan was an internal problem that the Chinese people had to solve.
The Taiwanese government vehemently opposes China's claim to sovereignty.
