Myanmar Will Hold An Election On December 28, 2025

JAKARTA - Myanmar authorities, Monday (18/8) announced that elections will be held on December 28, 2025, local media reported.

According to an MRTV report, the United Elections Commission stated that the country's "many-party democratic general election" day will fall on Sunday, December 28, 2025.

The election will be the first time held in a country with a majority Buddhist population since November 2020, which was won by the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Aung San Suu Kyi but was ousted in a military coup in February 2021.

The announcement was released after Myanmar's military junta last month formed a general election supervisory commission, signaling the emergency government would end soon.

Myanmar's junta leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, has now declared himself interim president.

The military coup in early 2021, which toppled the democratically elected NLD-led government, plunged Myanmar into an emergency government for more than 4 years.

In the latest developments, U Myint Swe, who was appointed interim president of Myanmar by the military junta following the 2021 coup, died earlier this month at the age of 74.

As a result of U Myint Swe's illness, the interim presidential term has been taken over by Senior General Min when he formed the general election supervisory commission.
