Women's Singles Paccyk Holds Longest At BWF World Championships

JAKARTA - Indonesian women's singles have clicked the longest title at the Badminton World Championship or BWF World Championship from four sectors that have experienced the highest podium of this prestigious event.

Badminton World Championships will resume this month, on August 25-31, 2025 at Adidas Arena, Paris, France. This is the 29th edition since it started in 1997.

The women's singles sector has so far secured two gold medals in the competition. Verawaty Fadjrin won the first gold medal in the second edition in 1980 which took place at Istora Senayan, Jakarta.

At that time Verawaty managed to beat compatriot Ivana Lie in the final match. It was Indonesia's most successful edition on this stage with the achievement of four gold medals, except for the women's doubles sector.

Verawaty, who also took part in the women's doubles at the time with Imelda Wiguna, had to settle for a silver medal after losing their final against British pair Nora Perry/Jane Webster.

Indonesia was recorded to have succeeded in placing eight representatives in the final in the 1980 edition and creating the All Indonesian Final in three sectors. In addition to women's singles, the final of fellow Indonesian representatives also occurred in men's singles and doubles.

Syahdan, the women's second singles gold medal was only obtained 13 years later through Susi Susanti. Susi, who won the Olympic gold medal in Barcelona in the previous year, beat Bang Soo-hyun from South Korea in the final.

Since then, Indonesian women's singles have never brought home gold. The best achievement after Susi was that of only two bronze medals, one of which was obtained by Susi herself in the 1995 edition and the other was obtained by Lindaweni Fanetri in the 2015 edition in Jakarta.

In this year's edition, Indonesia will try to end the title fast through Gregoria Mariska Tunjung and Putri Kusuma Wardani. However, the journey of the two names is predicted not to be easy.

The draw put Gregoria in the top chart which is in line with the first seed An Se Young and Putri Kusuma Wardani in the bottom chart, in line with world number two badminton player Wang Zhi Yi from China.

This year, Indonesia came there with a total of 12 representatives with the target of bringing home just one title. Senior players like Gregoria are also expected to shine on that important stage.
