SID Rayakan 25 Tahun SUMMIT Dan Grand Launching SMART MMS
JAKARTA - The Mitra Voice Development Institute Foundation or known as the Summit Institute for Development (SID) held a 25th anniversary of the SUMMIT Program, which is coupled with the launch of SMART-MMS, an innovation program to strengthen micronutrient supplementation monitoring and compliance for pregnant women in Lombok, Indonesia.
The SUMMIT (Supplementation with Multiple Micronutrients Intervention Trial) program implemented in Lombok in 2000-2004 is a large-scale study involving more than 42,000 pregnant women to assess the impact of Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) on increasing the survival of infants. The results show that MMS is able to reduce the infant mortality rate by 18%, reduce the 38 percent infant mortality rate in anemia pregnant women, and have a long-term impact on the cognitive increase of mothers and children, based on the results of the 10-year SUMMIT (S10Y) program, a follow-up program of SUMMIT.
Anuraj aired, as the main researcher of the SUMMIT program, stated that this program was carried out to answer research questions about the extent of MMS's impact on improving maternal and child health. In addition, SUMMIT also aims to see how MMS's effectiveness is in the context of programatics, when widely applied in primary health care systems.
This program is also an important moment to show how local researchers in Indonesia are able to carry out large-scale research with high standards. No less important, SUMMIT also assessed the impact of MMS on increasing cognitive mothers and babies.
The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenkes RI) has adopted MMS as a national program since 2024 in 15 priority provinces, one momentum for national policy changes initiated by SUMMIT, the challenge in monitoring consumption compliance by pregnant women is still there. Based on the 2018 Riskesdas (Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, 2019) shows that only 44.2 percent of pregnant women consume at least 90 TTD tablets during pregnancy. SMART-MS is here to answer these challenges with a targeted approach, utilizing technology for consumption monitoring, reporting, and community-based education.
Through collaboration between the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the NTB Provincial Government, health workers, academics, and international partners, SID leads the development of SMART-MMS with the integration of digital technology, training health workers, and strengthening data systems in health facilities and communities.
The successful launch of the SMART MMS and the sustainability of MMS programs in Indonesia cannot be separated from the strategic support of various partners, particularly the Sight and Life, a global foundation that focuses on improving nutrition and public health in developing countries. With the support of Sight and Life as well as their funding partner, the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), the SMART MMS program received reinforcement in research, innovation, evidence-based intervention, and development of targeted nutrition education strategies.
SID's collaboration with Sight and Life and CIFF is proof that cross-border and cross-sectoral cooperation is able to create major breakthroughs for the health of mothers and children, with Lombok becoming an innovation center that inspires the world.
Grand Launching SMART-MMS is a momentum to introduce a new approach based on digital innovation, real-time data, and community education to increase MMS consumption coverage and compliance in Indonesia.
dr. Sigit Sulistyo, MPH, General Country Manager of Sight and Life for Indonesia, in his speech said, an extraordinary achievement twenty-five years since the start of the SUMMIT study in Lombok. Starting with a scientific initiative, but now the results have been used to influence global policies including last year (2024) the Indonesian government decided to adopt MMS intervention as a National program.
"We believe that science combined with partnerships with local partner derivatives will be able to produce sustainable changes. On behalf of Sight and Life I congratulate the Summit Institute for Development and all partners for extraordinary travel, hopefully the launch of the Smart MMS program that we will do today will also contribute, such as the SUMMIT study that has been carried out not only for local, national, but also global levels," he said, quoted Friday, August 15.
