Zelenskyy Meets British PM Galang Support Refuses To Leave The Region To Russia
JAKARTA - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited London on Thursday to garner European support in an effort to prevent any agreement that would divide Ukrainian territory.
This visit is one day before the meeting of US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska tomorrow, Friday, August 15.
In a desperate position on the battlefield against Russian troops, Zelenskyy and his allies want to avoid any agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin that makes Ukraine more vulnerable to Russian attacks.
Zelenskyy met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to build momentum from Wednesday's virtual talks with European leaders and Trump to try to set boundaries for talks between Trump and Putin in Anchorage, Alaska.
Previously, Trump threatened to provide "heavy consequences" if Putin did not agree to peace in Ukraine. Although it did not specify the possible consequences, Trump warned of economic sanctions if his meeting on Friday yielded no results.
"Yesterday was an important moment to strengthen European and transatlantic unity," said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
"We need peace through power as a foundation for the future of security and global stability," he continued.
Zelensky said he warned Trump Putin "stumbled" about his desire to end the war.
The Ukrainian leader also said Trump supports the idea of security guarantees in postwar settlements. Politico cited sources familiar with the situation, reporting Trump said the US could provide guarantees on several conditions.
Sources familiar with the matter told Reuters security guarantees had been discussed in the phone call.
"We don't have details about his (Trump) views on this, but now he is more open to getting some kind of US support for the guarantee," the source said.
