PUNCH Wahana Successfully Capai Orbit, NASA Shares Initial Data To The Public

JAKARTA The Polarimeter mission for Unifying the Corona and Heliosphere (PUNCH), which includes four spacecraft, has reached its final orbit. Now, this NASA mission data is available to the public.

The four PUNCH spacecraft, which are as big as a suitcase, were launched into Earth orbit on March 11. Now, the four of them are already scattered along the Earth's day-night boundaries to provide views on the Sun and its surroundings.

With this position, the PUNCH vehicle can learn how the corona, or the outer atmosphere of the Sun, turns into a constant flow of material. This flux, also known as the solar wind, crosses the entire solar system.

"This planet (Earth) blocks the view of any spacecraft, so we have to deploy it across the planet in order to observe all places at once," said Craig DeForest, PUNCH's Main Researcher, quoted from NASA's website on Thursday, August 14.

Each ride carries a different instrument. One of them carries a Narrow Field Imager that functions as a coronagraph, while the other three rides carries a Wide Field Imager that captures the image of the outer parts of the corona and the solar wind.

Thanks to all these instruments, PUNCH was able to combine individual images of each vehicle into a mosaic in the wide field. That way, PUNCH can track space weather events from the Sun to Earth.

The PUNCH-coupled initial mosaic display is now publicly available as 'Level 2' science data This data has been processed and the images can be downloaded from NASA's Solar Data Analysis Center.
