The Ministry Of Transportation Sets 40 Airports With International Status, Here's The List

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Transportation has opened more international entrances by air transportation. Now, there are 40 airports in Indonesia with international status.

In detail, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (Hubud) has designated 36 public airports as International Airports through the Decree of the Minister of Transportation Number KM 37 and KM 38 of 2025.

Then, the Directorate General of Hubud also appointed 3 special airports with international status, as well as establishing a Subjud Airport managed by the Regional Government as an International Airport through the Decree of the Minister of Transportation Number 38 of 2025.

Director General of Civil Aviation, Lukman F. Laisa said that determining international status at an airport is a strategic step to strengthen Indonesia's position in the global aviation network.

Lukman emphasized that this effort was carried out while still prioritizing the fulfillment of service users safety, security and comfort standards as regulated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

"International status at airports brings non-light responsibility, every designated airport must ensure the fulfillment of safety, security and service standards, as well as prepare immigration, customs and quarantine facilities before being able to serve direct flights from and abroad," said Lukman in an official statement, Wednesday, August 13.

Lukman hopes that this step will not only strengthen air connectivity and facilitate trade and tourism flows, but also ensure equal distribution of international flight services in various parts of Indonesia.

"Broader connectivity will strengthen trade, tourism and investment access, so that the benefits can be felt evenly by all regions," said Lukman.

In line with that, the Ministry of Transportation also asked 14 airports whose status has been raised internationally to immediately complete the required documents. Including a consideration letter from the Minister of Defense, recommendations for the placement of work units and personnel from the ministry in charge of customs, immigration, and quarantine.

"All these requirements must be met no later than six months after the decision is made," said Lukman.

Lukman said, specifically for Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, foreign flights are only intended for non-scheduled commercial air transportation, non-commercial air transportation, as well as Indonesian state aircraft or foreign countries aircraft.

Furthermore, Lukman said that the implementation of activities as an international airport must also ensure the coordination of smoothness and order through the Airport Facilitation Committee (FAL). The Directorate General of Airport Transportation will conduct a minimum evaluation every two years of the performance and readiness of each airport.

"This evaluation will be a benchmark for the sustainability of an airport's international status. We will provide recommendations for status adjustment if performance is considered good and in accordance with evaluation results," said Lukman.

With this determination, Lukman continued, Indonesia's international air connectivity is expected to be stronger, not only concentrated in big cities, but also evenly to various strategic areas.

"This increase in access is expected to open new economic opportunities, strengthen trade and tourism flows, and emphasize the role of the air transportation sector as one of the pillars supporting national economic growth," he said.
