BMKG Issues Flood Early Warning Until August 20 In A Number Of Areas

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of the potential for flooding due to high rainfall which is estimated to last until August 20, 2025 in a number of areas, including Banten, West Java, and the majority of Papua.

BMKG Deputy for Climatology Ardhasena Sopaheliwakan was quoted by ANTARA as explaining that during that period several regencies/cities in South Sumatra, Bengkulu, Banten, North Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua, Central Papua, West Papua, and Southwest Papua were categorized as alert.

Meanwhile, areas in Central Papua, West Papua, Southwest Papua, Maluku, and West Java are in the alert category.

BMKG also divides up to the sub-district level that has the potential to experience flooding in high categories, including Bogor Regency (Leuwiliang, Nanggung, Pamijahan District), Sukabumi Regency (Kabandungan), South Sorong Regency (Fokour, Salkma, Sawiat).

Then Sorong Regency (Klayili, Makbon, Maudus, Sayosa, East Soyosa, Sunook), Central Maluku Regency (Amathai, North Seram), Mimika Regency (Iwaka, Kuala Kencana, Kwamki Narama, West Mimika, Mimika Baru, Wemak, Tembagapura), Maybrat Regency (Mare, South Mare), and Deiyai Regency (Bawobado).

BMKG forecasters explained that although currently around 57 percent of Indonesia's territory has entered the dry season, the potential for rain in some parts of Indonesia is influenced by a combination of atmospheric phenomena (Madden Julian Oscilliation, slowdown and wind meeting), the condition of the low-value mode dipole index has made the air mass flow of the Indian Ocean to Indonesia - the weather locality conditions in each region.

Even up to the basis of August three, BMKG said the potential for high flooding is predicted to hit Central Bengkulu Regency (Permatang Tiga) and North Bengkulu (Arma Jaya, Kerkap), Ambon City (Bagala, Ambon Bay).

Then Central Maluku Regency (Amahal, Leihitu, West Leihitu, North Seram, East Seram Kobi North Seram, East Seram Seti), West Seram Regency (Inamasol, Taniwel, East Taniwel), and East Seram Regency (Bula).

Furthermore, West Papua, the potential for high flooding is expected to occur in Fakfak Regency (East Fakfak, Kokas, Mbahamdandara Barat, Teluk Patipi), Teluk Wondama Regency (Rosiel, Roon, Duairi Bay, Wasior), and Sorong Regency (Klauili, Makbon, Maudus, East Sayosa, Sunook).

Meanwhile, the next high floods reached the basis of the three flood-threatened areas in Southwest Papua; Maybrat (Mare, Silalawat, Sayosa) and Sorong (Wemak).

That way, BMKG reminds people in affected areas to be aware of the potential for inundation and flooding by following safety/evacuation guidelines from government officials in the regions, especially those in areas with low topography - watersheds prone to overflow.
