A Rare Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Just Sold for IDR 21.8 Billion, It Has a Legendary Racing History

JAKARTA - A legendary classic sports car, a 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, was recently auctioned for a staggering US$1,345,000, equivalent to approximately Rp21.8 billion. The sale took place on the online auction platform Bring a Trailer on Wednesday, August 12.

According to its website, this unit, chassis number 4500089, is one of only 1,400 Gullwing coupes produced over three years. Even more special, it was among the first 167 units built between August and December 1954. This historic car was first delivered to its owner in San Francisco on December 6, 1954.

The car's main attraction lies in its engine, which holds a unique history. During a restoration carried out by renowned specialist Scott Grundfor in the early 2000s, the car was fitted with a 3.0-liter M198 inline-six engine with NSL specifications. This engine was reportedly a replacement for the 300SL (W194) race car that won the 1952 Le Mans race. This historic engine was then transferred to the Gullwing unit after the Le Mans race car was reunited with its original engine.

The 300SL's design was inspired by the W194 racing car and was created at the suggestion of US importer Max Hoffman to appeal to American buyers. Its most iconic feature, the upward-opening Gullwing doors, was a clever solution due to the lightweight tubular chassis and high sill.

This car is stunning in silver, repainted during the restoration. Inside, the cabin is trimmed in black leather with two sets of interchangeable seat cushions: one in black leather and the other in black and red checkered fabric, newly manufactured in 2025.

Furthermore, the car features classic features such as 15-inch chrome Rudge wheels with Michelin X tires, an ivory two-spoke steering wheel that tilts down for easy entry and exit, and a servo-assisted hydraulic drum brake system. All of this demonstrates exceptional care.

With its rich history, rarity, and meticulous attention to detail, it's no wonder this Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing is sought after by collectors and sells for such a high price.
