First Phase of Public School Construction in 159 Locations is Targeted for Completion End of August 2025

JAKARTA - Minister of Public Works (PU) Dody Hanggodo confirmed that the first phase of the construction of public schools (SR) facilities and infrastructure, spread across 159 locations nationwide, will be completed by the end of August 2025. Currently, Phase 1C work has entered the final phase, with the remaining furniture work remaining.

Minister Dody emphasized that the first phase of the SR renovation is part of a national strategic program aimed at providing access to decent education for underserved communities.

"Public schools target communities who have not yet had access to decent education, and are also a strategy to break the cycle of poverty by increasing independence, as hoped by President Prabowo Subianto," said Minister Dody in a written statement on Wednesday, August 13.

The first phase of the public school renovation utilizes existing buildings owned by the Ministry of Social Affairs, local government assets, and converted universities. The facilities built include classrooms, laboratories, libraries, teachers' lounges, prayer rooms, fields, teacher residences, dining rooms, health centers, and other supporting facilities.

Overall, Phase I construction is divided into three phases: Phase 1A, with 63 locations expected to be operational by July 14, 2025; Phase 1B, with 37 locations expected to be operational by July 31, 2025; and Phase 1C, with 59 locations still in the final stages of completion.

By accelerating the completion of Phase I, Dody hopes that public schools will become an instrument for equitable education, support poverty alleviation, and produce an independent and competitive generation of Indonesians. Furthermore, preparations are underway for the permanent construction of Phase II public schools, on land allocated by the local government of approximately 5-10 hectares.

"Construction of Phase II public schools is expected to begin in September 2025 and be ready for use in the 2026/2027 academic year. Students enrolled in Phase I will then be transferred to the Phase II locations," said Dody.

While preparing for Phase II, Dody ensures that all educational facilities currently in use in Phase I will continue to be well-maintained to ensure the continuity of teaching and learning activities. One of the first phases of public school infrastructure support is in Central Java Province, with 12 locations. Seven locations have now completed phase 1A, two locations have completed phase 1B, and three have completed phase 1C.
