BRIN Affirms MRNA Vaccine Causes Non-Based Cancer To Scientific Evidence, Hoax

JAKARTA - Research Center for Biomedical Research at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Khariri confirmed that the device-based vaccine ribonucleic acid (mRNA) can cause cancer to have no scientific basis.

"If we can answer claims that the mRNA vaccine causes cancer or anti-protein tumor suppression, we can call this baseless or baseless information based on scientific evidence," he said in a scientific discussion on vaccines and COVID-19 in Jakarta, Tuesday, August 12.

Khariri explained, mRNA works only to carry instructions for making temporary proteins, such as spike proteins on SARS-CoV-2. This process occurs in the cytoplasm of cells, not in the core of the cell where DNA is located.

"This instruction does not enter the core of the cell where DNA is located. And this process does not change DNA," he said.

He added that mRNA cannot insert into human DNA without the help of reverse transcriptase enzymes, which the human body does not have. There is no mechanism in mRNA vaccine that allows integration into human DNA.

According to Khariri, the mRNA platform has proven safe based on scientific data and is widely used in the development of modern vaccines.

Regarding the origin of the hoax, he assessed that the spread of misleading information was very easy to occur in the era of social media. He considered public education to be the key to fighting hoaxes, by conveying simple information and according to the level of public understanding.

"Use terms that can at least be accepted by the community properly without multiple meanings," he said.

Khariri also reminded researchers, academics, and health workers to always stick to scientific evidence when clarifying hoaxes.
