Real Madrid Face Midfield Concerns After Camavinga Injury Ahead of the New Season
JAKARTA - Eduardo Camavinga suffered an ankle injury on Sunday, August 10, 2025. This situation adds to Real Madrid's midfield woes ahead of the new La Liga season.
Los Blancos are already without midfielder Jude Bellingham—who underwent shoulder surgery last month and is expected to be out until October 2025. So far, Real Madrid has opted not to sign a new midfielder in this summer's transfer window.
Real Madrid will kick off the 2025/2026 La Liga season on August 19, 2025, hosting Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabeu—in an effort to bounce back from the 2024/2025 season, in which they failed to win a major trophy.
"Following tests carried out on Eduardo Camavinga by Real Madrid's medical services, the player has been diagnosed with a right ankle injury," read a brief statement from Real Madrid.
The 22-year-old has suffered five injuries in the last 12 months, limiting him to just 19 appearances in the 2024/2025 La Liga season.
Central midfield was a problematic position for Real Madrid last season. Their options are now even more limited with the departure of veteran Luka Modric, who joined AC Milan this summer.
In the transfer window, the search for second-line players has been relatively passive. Real Madrid has been aggressive in strengthening their defense, signing defenders Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, and Alvaro Carreras.
Another area that has been strengthened is the winger with the arrival of Franco Mastantuono—who will join this week when he turns 18.
To address the lack of second-line options, new coach Xabi Alonso opted to play Arda Guler in central midfield alongside Federico Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Bellingham during the 2025 Club World Cup—where they reached the semifinals.
"With the players we have, we can dominate in midfield," said Alonso.
ESPN reports that Real Madrid has no plans to sign any new players this summer, unless someone leaves first.
Los Blancos have included only three first-team midfielders—Tchouameni, Guler, and Dani Ceballos—in their squad for the friendly against WSG Tirol on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, with academy players Thiago Pitarch and Roberto Martin also included as cover.
