Villages In West Java Don't Manage Waste, Get Ready Not To Get Village Funds
JAKARTA - Minister of Environment (LH) as well as Head of the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq reminded local governments (Pemda) to view environmental management, including handling waste generation, as a long-term investment, not just a burden.
There is no reason to postpone environmental action. Pollution, piles of garbage, and natural damage must be stopped now. The central and regional governments must be at the forefront, but the community must also be part of the solution," said Hanif Faisol in a confirmed statement in Jakarta, Antara, Sunday, August 10.
He conveyed this message when he opened the Environmental Coordination Meeting in Cianjur, West Java, Saturday, August 9.
Hanif emphasized that the cost of environmental restoration that was damaged would be much greater than the cost of prevention. He highlighted data from the KLH/BPLH National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) which recorded waste production in West Java in 2024 reaching 6.1 million tons, with most of it not being optimally managed.
"In a number of districts/cities, management is still limited to transporting waste to the TPA without adequate sorting. This burdens processing facilities and increases the risk of pollution," he said.
The existence of illegal temporary disposal sites (TPS) also exacerbated problems. Garbage is often dumped carelessly into rivers and waterways, pollutes the environment, threatens health, and triggers flood risk.
KLH/BPLH encourages reduction in waste from its source, through sorting households, schools, offices, and industrial areas. Hanif also invited all stakeholders in West Java to collaborate to improve waste management.
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, on the same occasion, stated that he would implement a system of sanctions and awards for the village government.
"Villages that do not manage waste according to regulations will not receive Village Funds or governor assistance for village development," said Dedi.
On the other hand, villages that are able to maintain cleanliness and manage waste well will receive awards and additional program support.

The West Java Provincial Government will also strengthen environmental education from an early age through the Waste-Free Healthy School Program. This program integrates waste management materials in the curriculum, accompanied by outing class activities to waste processing facilities, so that students see firsthand the sorting, processing, and recycling processes.
