PSG Officially Signs Goalkeeper Chevalier, Manchester United and Chelsea Monitor Donnarumma
JAKARTA - Paris Saint-Germain has officially signed goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Lille. Chevalier's arrival displaces veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Manchester United and Chelsea are still monitoring Donnarumma's situation, who is set to be released by PSG.
PSG bought Chevalier for 40 million euros and immediately became the first-choice goalkeeper. Chevalier's purchase means that the previously irreplaceable Donnarumma is now out of the running. Moreover, the Italian national team goalkeeper only has one year left on his contract.
PSG has no intention of extending Donnarumma's contract, despite negotiations. However, negotiations between the two parties have consistently reached an impasse, leading PSG to consider selling the former AC Milan goalkeeper.
Although they no longer need Donnarumma's services, the elite French Ligue 1 club still hopes to sell him. However, Les Parisiens must immediately release the goalkeeper, who will be a free agent in January 2026.
At that time, if Donnarumma remains at PSG, he will be free to negotiate with any club without involving his former club.
Chevalier himself is a goalkeeper who graduated from the Lille academy. He was loaned to Valenciennes before becoming Lille's first-choice goalkeeper in 2022. Since then, Chevalier has emerged as one of the top goalkeepers in Ligue 1.
Best Goalkeeper
He was voted the best goalkeeper of the 2024/2025 season by the French Professional Footballers' Association after a stellar performance. He kept clean sheets in 11 of his 34 domestic matches.
The 23-year-old goalkeeper also conceded only 36 goals, although Lille ultimately failed to qualify for the Champions League due to goal difference. His career is predicted to skyrocket after joining PSG.
"I'm a kid who lives by dreams. As a child, I always wanted to play at the highest level. This is what makes me very happy to be here [joining PSG]. I will wear this jersey with great pride and high ambition," said Chevalier when responding to the PSG signing.
"I thank club chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi, [PSG Football Advisor] Luis Campos, coach Luis Enrique, and everyone who worked hard to get me to Paris Saint-Germain. I'm happy here," he added.
Chevalier's arrival means Donnarumma must leave. Moreover, Enrique won't be using him as a second-choice goalkeeper if he stays at PSG. The club is also eyeing Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who is projected to be Chevalier's backup.
Donnarumma's situation is also being monitored by Manchester United and Chelsea. The 26-year-old goalkeeper is on the radar of both the Premier League clubs and Inter Milan.
Manchester United is considering making a bid for Donnarumma to replace goalkeeper Andre Onana. However, the Red Devils will likely need to sell players before targeting Donnarumma.
However, Manchester United has a better chance of landing Donnarumma if they are serious about finding a new goalkeeper, as Chelsea is already quite satisfied with Robert Sanchez. However, Sanchez is considered inconsistent, so the Blues may want to hunt Donnarumma.
