Note! Indonesian Mountains To Be Closed On August 17, 2025

YOGYAKARTA - Climbing mountains to celebrate Indonesia's Independence Day has become an annual tradition eagerly awaited by many climbers. Raising the Indonesian flag at the summit or holding a 17th August ceremony in the midst of nature can be an unforgettable experience.

However, it's important to note that not all climbing routes in Indonesia are open to the public on August 17th, and this year is no exception. These closures are due to several factors, including safety, ecosystem restoration, and cultural and spiritual considerations of the local community.

Therefore, it's important for climbers to find out in advance which mountains are closed for Independence Day to avoid disappointment.

The Mountain That Closed on August 17, 2025

  1. Mount Gede Pangrango (West Java)

Mount Gede Pangrango, located within the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park (TNGGP), is one of the mountains that closed its hiking trails on August 17th this year. While no details were provided for the closure, TNGGP officials confirmed that climbing would not be permitted on Independence Day.

Usually, these closures are implemented to prevent crowds that could damage the environment and to ensure the safety of hikers. Those planning a trip here should reschedule their visit to avoid disappointment.

  1. Mount Merbabu via Thekelan Route (Central Java)

Mount Merbabu is known for its several hiking trails, one of which is the Thekelan Trail in Semarang Regency. However, in August 2025, this trail will be closed for an entire month, from August 1st to 31st.

This closure is to re-establish the trail and restore the ecosystem following forest fires that occurred in previous years. The Thekelan Trail was severely damaged and requires restoration measures.

However, don't worry. Hikers can still explore other trails, such as Wekas and Suwanting, which remain open to the public throughout August.

  1. Mount Merapi (Border of DIY and Central Java)

Mount Merapi, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, remains closed to climbing routes until August 17, 2025. This closure is triggered by the ongoing alert status due to high volcanic activity, such as lava flows and pyroclastic flows.

An official letter issued by the Mount Merapi National Park Office and signed by the Head of the Office, Muhammad Wahyudi, explains that climbing remains prohibited until further notice. This closure is being implemented as a disaster mitigation measure to protect the safety of climbers.

  1. Mount Semeru (East Java)

Mount Semeru, known as the roof of Java, has also closed its hiking trails for 10 days, from August 17 to 26, 2025. This closure is in observance of the Karo holiday, a sacred holiday for the Tenggerese indigenous people of Ranupani Village.

The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) stated that the final climb to Mount Semeru is permitted until Saturday, August 16, 2025. After that, all climbers must descend no later than Sunday, August 17, at 4:00 PM WIB. The trail will reopen on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

Karo Day celebrations are a form of respect for local community traditions that have been carried out for generations. Maintaining harmony between tourist activities and local culture is an important step in preserving this mountain area.
