Strengthen Security, Valve Will Stop Steam Support At MacOS 11 BIG Sur

JAKARTA Valve, an online service that develops Steam, will end the support of the gaming distribution platform on a number of Apple-made devices. This is done to optimize Steam.

The platform will stop operating on macOS 11 Big Sur or lower. This latest policy will begin to be implemented on October 15 and will have an impact on unrenewable MacBooks to a newer version of macOS.

Valve deliberately reduced the number of supported devices to maintain the security and functionality of Steam clients. That way, starting later this year, users can only access Steam on macOS-based MacBook Monterey and later.

This is not a new action for Valve as the company previously stopped Steam's support for macOS 10.13 High Sierra and 10.14 Mojave. However, this termination has a different focus.

Valve is now more focused on modern security needs and software compatibility. This is in line with an industry trend that requires the use of the latest operating system (OS) to maintain platform security.

Basically, this termination of support is not surprising because Apple has forgotten macOS Big Sur. The company ended security support for the OS Big Sur in 2023.

That way, devices with OS are much more vulnerable to malware attacks and other types of exploits. This can endanger Steam accounts as well as user personal data so that Valve must make a firmer decision.
