New Super League 2025/2026 Regulations: 8 Seconds Maximum Time Goalkeepers Hold The Ball

JAKARTA - The 2025/2026 Super League which starts rolling on August 8, 2025 will implement a number of new regulations. One of them is related to the maximum time for goalkeepers to hold the ball.

The chairman of the PSSI Referee Committee, Yoshimi Ogawa, explained that this rule was implemented in accordance with FIFA regulations.

Yoshimi Ogawa explained that in the new season, goalkeepers or goalkeepers are only allowed to hold the ball for a maximum of eight seconds.

According to him, the regulation was implemented to avoid goalkeepers who deliberately bought time in the match.

"So, we will start implementing this new regulation in the 2025/2026 season, one of which is about the maximum time the goalkeeper is holding the ball, which is eight seconds," said Yoshimi Ogawa at the GBK Arena, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

If the eight-second rule is violated, Ogawa said that there will be rewards in the form of giving a corner to opponents.

If the error is made twice, the referee will give the goalkeeper a warning and give a corner for the opposing team.

Then, if the goalkeeper continues to do this for the third time, he will get a yellow card.

Furthermore, Yoshimi Ogawa also explained that in the new regulations, only the captain may protest to the referee.

If there are other players who participate in the protest, then the referee has the right to give a yellow card without thinking.

However, he also said that if the referee had the right to invite the captain to appoint one player to discuss in the event of a violation.

Regarding these new regulations, Yoshimi Ogawa said that his party had informed each club in the Super League.

This new regulation, according to Ogawa, will raise the awareness of the players to respect each other's regulations.

Later he believes that the Super League can develop and respond quickly in terms of competition.

"We have held this lesson to the referee and there are representatives from FIFA. There is a lot of progress in the 2025/2026 Super League referees, be it physical, technical, and disciplined. They are getting better," said Yoshimi Ogawa.
