Apple Vision Pro Can Monitor Breathing To Support Mindfulness
JAKARTA - Recent research from Apple reveals that the company is exploring Apple Vision Pro's ability to track its users' breathing as part of health monitoring.
In June 2024, the code on videoOS shows the possibility of a breathing tracking feature on Vision Pro, particularly in the Mindfulness app. Although this code shows features that will be coming soon, until one year later this feature has not been seen on the device.
However, this feature appears in Apple's latest patent titled Non-Contract Respiration Sensing. Illustrations in this patent are similar to those of Apple Glass's style glasses, but there are also those that show the current Vision Pro headset. This suggests this technology may indeed be intended for Vision Pro.
The patent describes the use of interferometry sensors around the headset nose area. This sensor emits electromagnetic radiation into the user's respiratory airflow and produces signals that provide information about particle movements in the respiratory tract.

With this technology, the headset can measure:
Respiratory rate
Respiratory speed
Volume and breathing quality
Whether the user breathes through the nose or mouth
Information about inhaled and exhaled particles
Although the patent does not mention mindfulness, the potential is clear. This feature can help users maintain a healthy breathing pattern or even warn if carbon dioxide levels in the air are high, similar to environmental warnings on the Apple Watch.
With this sensor, Vision Pro can not only guide users to breathe with a calm rhythm, but can also ensure that breathing exercises are carried out properly.
The patent was filed in May 2023 and credited to three inventors, including Miaolei Yan, who previously developed site detection using a mini gas sensor on the iPhone.
