The Trade Of 15.5 Kg Pangolin Scales In West Kalimantan Was Thwarted, The Perpetrators Were Threatened With 15 Years In Prison
The Directorate General of Law Enforcement (Gakkum) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) thwarted an illegal trade effort of 15.52 kilograms of pangolin scales (Manis javanica) in Mempawah Regency, West Kalimantan, on Sunday, August 3.
A perpetrator with the initials BLJ was arrested while being caught carrying the scales of the protected animal in a cardboard box stored in a car. He allegedly wanted to trade pangolin scales from Bengkayang Regency to Mempawah.
"We take firm action against any violations related to the circulation and trade of protected animals. This is part of the commitment to protect Indonesia's forest and biodiversity ecosystems," said Head of the Kalimantan KLHK Gakkum Center Leonardo Gultom, Antara, Wednesday, August 6.
The arrest of the perpetrators began with a community report. The Gakkum team, which carried out an in-depth information, then conducted an operation in the field and succeeded in securing the perpetrators and evidence.
The perpetrator is now being held at the Pontianak Class II A Detention Center and charged with the Law on Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and their Ecosystems. He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a fine of up to IDR 5 billion.
Leonardo expressed his appreciation to all those who helped reveal this case. According to him, this success reflects cross-institutional cooperation in protecting endangered wildlife.
Meanwhile, Director General of Gakkum KLHK Dwi Januarto Nurgroho stated that his party continues to strengthen supervision and eradicate illegal animal crime networks.
The pangolin is one of the most vulnerable to extinction. If it is not protected, the ecosystem will be disrupted, and the rights of future generations for forests and biodiversity can be lost," said Dwi.
