Rupiah Was Opened Wednesday To Weaken 0.4 Percent To Rp15,530 Per US Dollar

JAKARTA - The rupiah exchange rate on the spot market was opened lower in trading Wednesday, April 22. The rupiah opened lower by 62 points or 0.4 percent to IDR 15,530 per US dollar.

Head of Research at Monex Investindo Futures, Ariston Tjendra, said that yesterday's crude oil price fell again, which gave negative sentiment to market players.

"The oil industry involves many stakeholders, including financial companies, so if the industry slumps, the negative impact can be felt on the economy," he told VOI.

In addition, he said, the drop in oil prices signals the global economy is still under pressure, which reduces demand for oil as an energy source.

"If this negative sentiment persists, the Rupiah could be depressed again to the range of Rp15,600 with potential support in the range of Rp15,400 per US dollar," said Ariston.

This morning, currencies in Asia were mixed against the US dollar. The ones recorded to have strengthened included the Singapore dollar (0.20 percent), the Thai baht (0.15 percent), the Chinese yuan (0.07 percent), the Malaysian ringgit and the Japanese yen which both gained 0.02 percent.
