IPad Screen Technology Will Make The IPhone Brighter And Save Power

JAKARTA - Apple is considering bringing iPad's Tandem OLED technology to the iPhone to increase screen brightness and potentially extend battery life on iPhone models in the future.

When the Cupertino company introduced the iPad Pro OLED in 2024, they used the Tandem OLED panel. Now, Apple is seriously considering implementing the same technology on next-generation iPhone phones.

According to an Elec source, LG Display has spoken to Apple about the SIMPLified Tandem OLED panel in 2024. Apple then discussed with Samsung Display, another major partner in the supply of OLED panels, on this technology.

Apple hasn't decided whether to use Tandem OLED on the iPhone yet, but they are still in talks with LG and Samsung. Apple is rumored to be interested in LG technology, but they may need more screen manufacturer partners before actually adopting it.

With Apple's usual mass development and production schedule taking two years, the report predicts that the first iPhone with this technology may only appear after 2028.

Double Screen Profits

The OLED Tandem is basically a stacked and used bilayer of OLED simultaneously. Because OLED is a light-emitting screen technology itself (does not require backlight), the buildup of this layer makes the light produced brighter by minimal waste of power.

Meanwhile, the Simplified Tandem OLED is a more efficient version because it does not duplicate all subpixels. In ordinary OLED, each pixel consists of red, green, and blue (RGB) subpixes.

In the standard OLED Tandem, because there are two identical layers, each pixel uses six subpixels (two red, two green, two blue).

While the Simplelified Tandem OLED still uses two layers, but the second layer only has a blue subpixel, with empty space for red and green.

Both versions offer brighter screens and power savings than ordinary OLED, but Simpler Tandem OLED is simpler and cheaper to produce.

This isn't the first time Apple has considered the OLED Tandem. In July 2024, it was reported that Samsung and LG Display are developing a version of this technology for the OLED micro panel, which is likely to be used in the next generation of Apple Vision Pro to increase display brightness.

Thus, this technology can become a new standard for Apple devices in the future, from the iPad, iPhone, to the AR/VR headset.
