Son Heung-min Will Break MLS Transfer Record When Joining LAFC

JAKARTA - South Korean player Son Heung-min is ready to sign a contract with MLS (Major League Soccer) club, LAFC (Los Angeles FC), with an announcement to be made soon on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, local time.

The 33-year-old announced his departure from Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

He ended his 10-year career at the London club despite not mentioning his next destination.

However, according to various reports, Son will join the LAFC at a cost of around US$26 million (Rp426.2 billion).

This figure will break the record 22 million US dollars spent by Atlanta United FC last winter to sign striker Emmanuel Latte Lath.

Son played his last game for Spurs on Sunday, August 3, 2025, in Seoul in a friendly against Newcastle United, a match that ended in a 1-1 draw.

Son Heung-min received lively applause and respect from both teams as he was replaced in the second half.

"It was the perfect moment. Sharing these beautiful moments is something I will never forget. I will always appreciate it, the fans, the players, and the coaches."

"He understands my situation and is always on my side. He always listens to me and asks what I want to do. I have great respect and are very grateful," Son said on the club's website.

ESPN reported in June 2023 that Son received a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad, although he chose to remain in Spurs at the time.

Now it seems that LAFC has beaten Al Ittihad to get Son's signature.

Tottenham's victory in the Europa League final over Manchester United gave Son the opportunity to lift his first trophy for the club after becoming the seventh player to make 450 appearances for Spurs - with 198 goal contributions in the Premier League - since his move from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 for 22 million.

Son will join the LAFC who are currently sixth in the MLS Western Region despite having at least two games left over from the teams above them in the standings.
