Guangzhou Becomes The Leading City Recording Fantastic Rates In Autonomous Vehicle Tests
JAKARTA Guangzhou is the largest city in the world in the early 19th century and is now the capital and largest city of Guangdong Province in southern China. The city has just made significant steps in the autonomous vehicle revolution.
Guangzhou has reported more than 24.41 million cumulative kilometers of autonomous vehicle test travel. This extraordinary achievement is part of a city administration initiative involving 17 companies in the public transportation, logistics, and other urban services sectors. These figures were released in conjunction with ongoing efforts to formulate new administrative guidelines to regulate unmanned vehicle systems in the region, as reported by Guangzhou Daily, quoted from CarNewsChina, Monday, August 4.
The autonomous driving program is centered in Guangzhou, where trial operations have expanded over 2,600 kilometers of designated public roads. This includes 1,340 public road segments and 10 toll road routes, which span eight administrative districts. As of July 2025, autonomous vehicles in the city have recorded more than 1.3 million operating hours. Amazingly, in 2024, 93.17 percent of driving distances were carried out in automatic mode, up 3.67 percentage points from the previous year.
Currently, the demonstration project involves 508 autonomous vehicles operating in various sectors, including urban transits, cargo logistics, and city services. Guangzhou Bus Group has deployed 50 autonomous buses on more than 10 lanes, while 75 additional vehicles operated byten.ai, WeRide, and Ruqi Mobility are part of the pilot program. WeRide has even introduced more than 50 autonomous sanitation vehicles.
