Taufan Purbo Calls Malin Kundang's Biggest Challenge At The Sabang Merauke Performance

Taufan Purbo has again appeared for the Sabang Merauke Performance - The Indonesian Broadway, which for this year has the theme Hikayat Nusantara'.

This time, Taufan got a different role from previous years. He will perform a famous character from West Sumatra, Malin Kundang.

"This has been the umpteenth time participating in the Sabang Merauke Performance. Now with a different concept, when I heard Malin Kundangan's story, this is interesting, because Malin's side will be told something that has never been told before," said Taufan, met on the sidelines of a joint training session at Grand Ballroom - Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, Central Jakarta, Sunday, August 3.

Although enthusiastic about the new concept presented, Taufan admitted that his role as Malin Kundant was a challenge in itself.

Lumayan harus ngulik, karena dari faktor dialectnya. Saya sih sih belum ketemu dengan director-nya, tapi kita nanti tetap berdialog dengan bahasa Indonesia, ujar Taufan.

In addition, the location of the larger event is another challenge that must be conquered by Taufan. The reason is that he also has to do several choreography.

"The choreography is extraordinary. This is the first time we have performed at the Indonesia Arena, the blocking is huge, so the choreography will drain. But the results will be exciting," he added.

Taufan also expressed his hope that the Sabang Merauke Performance could be a celebration of Indonesia's wealth as well as foster a sense of love for the Nusantara tradition.

"In the current Indonesian situation, a sense of love for culture and tradition must be grown, even though the method is not easy," he said. Yes, a show like this is a good means, suitable for family and children. So, the younger generation can get to know and watch shows that feel like traveling around Indonesia, it feels like all over the region.

Meanwhile, the Sabang Merauke - The Indonesian Broadway performance with the theme Hikayat Nusantara will be held at the Indonesia Arena Senayan, Central Jakarta on August 23 and 24.

A total of 31 songs and dozens of dances from almost all over the archipelago will be performed to represent regional cultural wealth, such as 'Padang Wulan' from Central Java, 'Bungong Jeumpa' from Aceh, Butet and Rambadia from North Sumatra, to Injit-Injit Ants from Jambi and Pak Pung Pak Mustafa from Riau.

The audience will also be invited to enjoy the beauty of Gending Sriwijaya from South Sumatra, Pang Lipang Dang from Lampung, Kambanglah Bungo from West Sumatra, and the modern medley Remix of Andalas Island Bersatu which unites the spirit of Sumatra.

From West Java will be present Manuk Dadali, from Jakarta Keroncong Kemayoran, from East Java Jangkrik Genggong and Umbul Umbul Blambangan, as well as Mahadewi from Yogyakarta. Meanwhile, Central Kalimantan will present the composition of Kalimantan's typical instrumental.

This diversity is equipped with Lulo from Southeast Sulawesi, Come on Mama and Hi Rame-Rame from Maluku, Putri Cening Ayu and Tembang Calon Charcoal from Bali, Songong from East Nusa Tenggara, and Sajojo from Papua. In addition, the national anthem Syukur, the thematic song Nusantara, and the closing song self-Inspirations will be symbols of togetherness and the spirit of unity which is at the heart of this performance.

In terms of musicals, Elwin Hendrijanto, an Indonesian composer who is also known for his work in the Hollywood film industry, will act as Music Director. Meanwhile, Maestro Avip Priatna as the conductor of the orchestra from the Jakarta Concert Orchestra, supported by a choir from Batavia Madrigal Singers and The Resonanz Children's Choir.
