Failing with Lookman, Inter Milan Returns to Target Christopher Nkunku
JAKARTA - Inter Milan is serious about not continuing negotiations to acquire Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman. Now, Inter is again targeting Christopher Nkunku, who is about to be released by Chelsea.
Inter is completely uninterested in Lookman, especially after Atalanta rejected their second offer of 42 million euros plus performance-based bonuses.
Atalanta was asking for 50 million euros for Lookman. However, Inter is not a club willing to spend big, like Manchester United did when they brought in Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta.
Despite being valued at 72 million pounds, Hojlund has yet to prove his mettle in the Premier League. His ineffectiveness nearly led to Manchester United's relegation to the Championship last season.
In contrast, Inter is very careful in acquiring players. When Atalanta refused to lower their price for Lookman, Inter immediately shut the door on offers. Even Atalanta's softened stance, asking for 45 million euros plus bonuses, Inter ignored them.
Instead, the Nerazzurri have turned to Nkunku again. Previously, Inter had shown interest in signing the French international. However, these negotiations were delayed due to Inter's focus on Lookman.
According to Calciomercato.com, Inter considered Nkunku as their primary alternative to bolster Cristian Chivu's team's attacking prowess.
The opportunity to sign Nkunku was quite open after Inter failed to sign Lookman. Moreover, Chelsea had listed Nkunku as one of the players they were planning to release.
However, Inter were hampered by Nkunku's high salary. At Chelsea, he earns 6.5 million euros per year. In contrast, Lookman was happy with the 4.5 million euros per year offered by Inter.
However, Lookman ultimately failed to move to Inter due to Atalanta's rejection. Now, Atalanta is struggling after Inter withdrew their offer. Lookman has expressed his desire to leave La Dea.
Atalanta's attempts to offer their player to Premier League clubs have also failed. No Premier League clubs have shown interest in Lookman.
Manchester United, for example, is more interested in Nkunku, a versatile player. He can play on the wing or as a center forward. Nkunku can also play as a second striker.
This is why Inter will compete with Manchester United for Nkunku. However, if Manchester United signs striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, they will likely forget about Nkunku.
