BPOM Revokes Circular Permits For 34 Dangerous Cosmetics, Some Trigger Cancer And Kidney Damage

JAKARTA - The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) revoked the distribution permit for 34 cosmetic products that were proven to contain hazardous and/or prohibited materials. A number of these products are known to trigger various health problems, ranging from allergies to cancer.

"BPOM has taken firm action against cosmetic findings that are proven to contain this dangerous and/or prohibited material. BPOM has revoked distribution permits and temporarily suspended activities (PSK), which include stopping production, circulation and importation activities," said the Head of BPOM Taruna Ikrar in Jakarta, Antara, Friday, August 1.

This finding is the result of the intensification of BPOM supervision of cosmetic products circulating in the market from April to June 2025.

The majority of the 34 products withdrawn were the result of a production contract, which was 28 items. The rest consists of 2 local cosmetic products and 4 imported products.

Based on sampling and laboratory tests, all these products are positive for harmful and/or prohibited materials such as mercury, retinoate acid, hydroquinon, lead, methyl yellow dye, and steroids.

BPOM explained that these substances can have mild to severe effects on health. Here are a number of impacts expressed. Mercury causes changes in skin color (black spots), allergies, irritation, headaches, vomiting, diarrhea, to kidney damage.

Retinoatic acid, causes dry skin, burning taste, and fetal disorders for pregnant women. Hydroquinon: risks causing hyperpigmentation, cochronosis (permanent black skin), and changes in the color of the cinema as well as nails and lead that can damage the body's organ system.

Yellow metanil (forbidden color), is carcinogenic and can damage the liver and nervous system and brain.
