Pakistani Opposition Leader Imprisoned For 10 Years In The Aftermath Of Former PM Imran Khan's Arrest Demo

JAKARTA - The leader of the opposition in Pakistan Parliament, Omar Ayub Khan, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in connection with a demonstration case in favor of former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan in May 2023.

Quoting AFP, Thursday, July 31, the Tereek-e-Insaf (PTI) party where Omar belongs issued a statement that different sentences for detention were also imposed on 100 other convicts in the same case.

Apart from Omar, they are six lawmakers, a senator, and a provincial lawmaker.

In a hearing held on Thursday, July 31, Omar was found guilty of conspiring to incite violence and inciting riots and arson in a demonstration protesting the arrest of Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

PTI later said it would appeal the decision imposed on Omar and his cadres. According to PTI, this court verdict will set a fast precedent for Pakistan's democracy.

Currently, PTI cadres, including Omar, have not been detained after filing a guarantee.
