Background Of Rengasdengklok Incident Ended In Kidnapping

YOGYAKARTA The Rengasdengklok incident is a term that refers to the attempt to kidnap important figures from Japanese influence, which at that time intended to delay the proclamation of Indonesian independence. In this incident, important figures who were victims of the kidnapping were Soekarno and Hatta. The background of the Rengasdengklok incident was due to differences of opinion and the desire to keep the nation's important figures away from the influence of Japan.

In a study entitled Rengasdengklok Incident, the Opening of Indonesian Independence which was published in the History & History Education Journal of the University of Jambi, it was stated that the kidnapping of Rengasdengklok was triggered because of different opinions between youth groups and parents.

The difference of opinion between the young and old groups is related to the time and way Indonesia's independence is proclaimed.

The young group in the Rengasdengklok incident was filled with young people. They argue that Indonesia should immediately announce its independence after Japan surrendered to allies after the City of22 and Hiroshima was bombed on August 6 and 9, 1945. Some youth figures who are included in the youth group are as follows.

Meanwhile, the old group is filled with figures who want the proclamation to be announced bureaucratically, namely with Japanese approval. It should be noted that previously, Japan had also promised independence for Indonesia. The old group welcomed the promise carefully. Some figures who belong to the old group are as follows.

Before the kidnapping of Rengasdengklok occurred, the Indonesian people were shocked by the handover of Japan to allies. The handover of Japan to allies was then considered a good opportunity to declare Indonesia's independence. Unfortunately, there was a dispute between the youth group and the old group represented by Sukarno.

Despite the dispute, the two groups both wanted to declare Indonesia's independence. It's just that the two groups have different opinions regarding the technical proclamation.

The youth group and Soekarno had negotiated. Unfortunately, the young group considers Soekarno to be too bureaucratic and too careful so they do not accept the plans for the proclamation of independence submitted by youth.

The efforts of the youth group to persuade Soekarno were carried out several times but always tough. Not losing their minds, they then went to Mohammad Hatta's residence and asked him to persuade Soekarno to immediately proclaim Indonesia's independence. The result was nil. Both rejected the plan for the same reason, did not want to violate the authority of the Indonesian Independence Preparation Committee (PPKI).

A tough discussion between the youth group and Soekarno-Hatta then led to their reckless kidnapping. On August 16, 1945, at around 03.30 in the morning, members of the youth secretly came to Soekarno's house and took him from Jakarta to Rengasdengklok, an area now known as a sub-district in Karawang Regency, West Java.

Arriving at Rengasdengklok, there were long negotiations. Even the heated debate between the old and young groups in Rengasdengklok was inevitable. But in the end, an agreement was made that independence would be announced on Friday, August 17, 1945.
