BMKG Revokes Tsunami Early Warning In Indonesia As A Result Of The Russian Earthquake

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Wednesday night lifted a tsunami early warning issued after an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 rocked the Kamchatka region, Russia.

Director of Earthquake and Tsunami BMKGDaryono said the tsunami early warning period due to the Kamchatka earthquake which was delivered at 06.24 WIB was declared to have ended at 23.00 WIB, Wednesday, July 30.

Considerations for the lifting of early warnings are based on the results of marigram analysis, a high sea level graph.

According to Daryono, data from monitoring points has shown that the wave has narrowed significantly.

"All marigrams tend to be sleek, the picture of energy is already dissipated," said Daryono.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 that occurred on the east coast of Kamchatka on Wednesday morning had triggered sea level rise as high as 5 to 20 cm in several parts of Eastern Indonesia.

tsunami alert status was imposed because the earthquake was estimated to have the potential to trigger a tsunami in areas such as Talaud Islands, Gorontalo, North Halmahera, Manokwari, Raja Ampat, Biak Numfor, Supiori, North Sorong, Jayapura, and Sarmi.
