Danger Sign Alarm, Indonesian Basarnas Express Alert To Face Tsunami Impact Of M 8.7 Russia Earthquake
JAKARTA - Basarnas is on full alert to anticipate the impact of a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 on the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia, which triggered tsunami early warnings in a number of parts of Indonesia on Wednesday morning.
Basarnas Deputy Operations Eko Suyatno said his party had directed all Technical Implementation Units (UPT) of the SAR Office in North Sulawesi, North Maluku, West Papua, and Gorontalo, to increase preparedness.
"We are ready to anticipate the impact of the earthquake in Russia," he said, confirmed in Jakarta, Wednesday, July 30, which was confiscated by Antara.
He explained that the tsunami early warning from the BMKG had been forwarded to each SAR office, which may have been affected by the area, to immediately take anticipatory steps.
Basarnas also ensures the readiness of SAR teams and equipment in the regions to support the evacuation of residents if needed.
"Strict coordination with related technical agencies in the regions has also been carried out, in order to deal with the possibilities that occurred due to the earthquake," he said.

The area is the Talaud Islands with an estimated wave arrival time of 14.52.24 WITA, Gorontalo City (16.39.54 WITA), North Halmahera (16.04.24 WIT), Manokwari (16.08.54 WIT), Raja Ampat (16.18.54 WIT), Biak Numfor (16.21.54 WIT), Supiori (16.21.54 WIT), North Sorong (16.24.54 WIT), Jayapura (16.30.24 WIT), and Sarmi (16.30.24 WIT).
The BMKG earthquake and tsunami monitoring team reported that the results of the earthquake parameter updating showed the epicenter was located at coordinates 52.51 degrees North Latitude (LU) and 160.26 degrees East Longitude (BT) at a depth of 18 kilometers, due to plate subduction activity in Palung Kurile-Kamchatka (Kurile-Kamchatka Trench) with the fault mechanism rising.
As of 08.30 WIB BMKG detected seven aftershock activity with the largest magnitude 6.9 and the smallest 5.4.
Based on a report by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), the earthquake also has the potential to trigger a tsunami in the regions of Russia, Japan, Alaska, the Philippines, Hawaii, and Guam.
