Riots On The Demo On The Increase In Fuel In Angola Killed 4 People, Hundreds Of People Arrested

JAKARTA - Big protests in Angola over rising fuel prices (BBM) killed four people with hundreds of people arrested. Riots continued in several areas of the capital Luanda on Tuesday.

The violence on Monday, July 28, involving looting, vandalism, and clashes with police, followed the government's decision earlier this month to raise the price of diesel by a third to ease the burden of expensive fuel subsidies on public finances.

The minibus taxi association, which then raised fares by 50%, launched a three-day strike to protest the move on Monday, when violence erupted.

More than 500 people were arrested, and shops, banks, buses, and private vehicles were damaged, national police spokesman Mateus Rodrigues said at a news conference.

The oil-producing country in South Africa has been gradually cutting fuel subsidies since 2023, when protests over rising gasoline prices also led to death.
