From Ecosystem To Economy, BNI Builds A Future Through Mangrove Forests

JAKARTA - PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk or BNI continues to strengthen its commitment to environmental conservation and climate change mitigation through real action of mangrove forest conservation, in line with the global spirit of commemorating World Mangrove Day which falls every 26 July.

BNI Deputy President Director Alexandra Askandar said that throughout 2024 to mid-2025, BNI had planted mangrove trees on 60 hectares of land spread across two main conservation areas, namely Pangpang Bay in Banyuwangi and Lembung Ecotourism in Pamekasan.

"The two locations are coastal areas that have great potential to support the development of the Blue Carbon Ecosystem and restoration of critical land that has high ecological value,"Alexandra Askandar said in a written statement, Saturday, July 26.

Alexandra Askandar continued, BNI carried out various green initiatives through the BNI Sharing program, which is part of the Company's Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL). This program is carried out collaboratively by involving local communities, local governments, as well as strategic partners, especially in coastal areas.

Not only from an ecological perspective, the benefits of mangroves are also felt directly for coastal communities. This ecosystem is an important habitat for various marine species and endemic birds, as well as supporting increased fishing catch through improving water quality. Thus, mangrove conservation will also create a sustainable economic impact.

In addition to planting, BNI also builds supporting facilities such as clean water facilities, worship facilities, electricity, and public toilets around conservation sites. This step not only supports the needs of the community, but also supports the development of local ecotourism based on natural conservation.

BNI believes that environmental protection is an inseparable part of a sustainable business strategy. Therefore, the Company will continue to strengthen synergies with various parties in carrying out environmental initiatives that have a broad impact.

"Conservation is not just a temporary project, but is part of our long-term commitment to building a greener, more sustainable, and inclusive future," said Alexandra Askandar.

This step is in line with BNI's commitment to long-term sustainability, in line with the principles of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). This effort is expected to create a wider positive impact on the environment, society and the national economy.
