Pudel Joins Coast Guard Dog Team In Spayol

JAKARTA - A Pudel-type dog named Nilo joined four Laborador dogs in a dog rescue team on Las Lindas Beach near Malaga, Spain, helping coast guards pull people back to the beach.

With its smooth white coat, life vest attached to the chest, and sunscreen applied to its long nose, this two-year-old dog has an unusual posture, as Spanish coastal dog rescue teams generally use Labrodor and Newfoundland.

Handler Nilo, dog instructor Miguel Sanchez-Merenciano (45) told Reuters he entered the water first to reach a difficult swimmer before summoning Nilo or another dog to help them return to safety.

Interestingly, Nilo used to be afraid of loud noises and crowds, so the training had to be carried out in stages, explained Sanchez-Merenciano.

"It has gone from vertical swimming and wrong to fully horizontal swimming, with perfect motion, using its tail perfectly like steering to spinning and moving," he said.

Pudel, a dog breed from Germany, has been historically used to save water, he said, although especially in hunting and taking work in northern European lakes, its scintillating fur protects them from cold.

Indeed, the name "pudel" comes from the German word "puddeln", which means "scatting water", Sanchez-Merenciano said.

Pudel is also known for its extraordinary intelligence and extraordinary learning skills, according to the American Kennel Club (ACC).
