Indonesia Values France's Plan To Recognize Palestinian Country As A Positive Step

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government considers France's plan to recognize the Palestinian State, calling on other countries to follow the steps taken by President Emmanuel Macron's administration.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its upload on social media wrote that Indonesia welcomed President Macron's announcement regarding France's plan to recognize the Palestinian State.

"This recognition is a positive step to ensure future prospects for the establishment of a sovereign and independent Palestinian State, based on the agreed territory in 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, through the Two-State Solution," the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted as quoted on Saturday, July 26.

"Indonesia urges all countries that have not recognized the Palestinian State to follow France's steps," added the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Earlier, President Macron in his post on social media X announced France's plan to recognize the Palestinian State at the UN General Assembly next September, hoping it would help bring peace to the region.

"In accordance with its historical commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided France will recognize the Palestinian State," President Macron said.

"I will make this solemn announcement at the United Nations General Assembly next September," he added.

So far, there are 11 EU member states that have recognized the Palestinian State out of a total of 27 block member states.

In less than a year, four EU countries recognized Palestinian countries, namely Norway, Ireland, Spain and Slovenia.

Previously, there were groups of eastern European countries such as Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Bulgaria, and Greek Cyprus who had recognized the Palestinian State since 1988, quoted from Anadolu.

In 2014, Sweden's recognition of the Palestinian State marked its first shift in western and northern Europe.

Outside the countries above, Belgium, Malta and Luxembourg are considering the recognition of the Palestinian State.

Meanwhile, at the global level, 142 countries currently recognize the Palestinian State out of a total of 193 UN member states.
