East Java And West Java Provinces Record The Most Poor Population
JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) revealed that the number of poor people in Indonesia in March 2025 was recorded at 23.85 million people or equivalent to 8.74 percent of the total population. This figure decreased by 0.10 percentage points compared to September 2024 and decreased by 0.56 percentage points to March 2024.
Deputy for Social Statistics BPS Ateng Hartono said that the highest number of poor people was still concentrated in Java, of which 12.56 million poor people were recorded, or the equivalent of 52.66 percent of the total national poor population.
"The number of poor people is still concentrated on the island of Java, which is 12.56 million poor people are on the island of Java or the contribution is around 52.66 percent of the total population of the national poor," he said at a press conference, Friday, July 25.
After Java Island, the highest number of poor people is on the island of Sumatra, which is 5.14 million people or around 21.56 percent of the total national poor population.
The next position is occupied by the regions of Bali and Nusa Tenggara with a total of 1.92 million poor people or around 8.03 percent.
In the next place is Sulawesi, which recorded 1.85 million poor people or about 7.75 percent of the total national.
Meanwhile, Maluku is in the position after that with a total of 1.49 million poor people or about 6.25 percent of the total poor population in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, the number of poor people is least in Kalimantan, which is 0.89 million people or about 3.75 percent of the total national.
He also said that almost all regions in Indonesia experienced a decrease in the number of poor people.
"When compared between March 2025 and September 2024, almost all islands experienced a decrease in the number and percentage of poor people. The biggest decline occurred in Bali and Nusa Tenggara, namely in March 2025, decreased by 0.22 percent compared to September 2024, Nah, except in Maluku and Papua where the percentage and the amount of poverty increased," he explained.
