Alibaba Launches Open-Source AI Model, Claimed To Be The Most Advanced

JAKARTA - Alibaba Group announced the launch of the Qwen3-Coder on Wednesday, July 23, an open source artificial intelligence (AI) model for the development of software called by the Chinese e-commerce giants as the most advanced coding tool they have to date.

The launch comes amid growing competition among Chinese technology companies in the global AI development race, with companies on both sides of the Pacific releasing increasingly sophisticated models.

"Qwen3-Coder is designed for software development tasks such as code creation and management of complex coding workflows," Alibaba said in a statement.

The company positions the model as a seed in an "agent AI coding task" - an automated process in which AI systems can work independently on programming challenges.

According to Alibaba's performance data, Qwen3-Cider outperforms domestic competitors, including models from DeepSek and Moonshot AI's K2, in key coding capabilities.

Alibaba also claims that their model has performance on par with leading US models, such as Claude from Anthropic and OpenAI's GPT-4, in certain areas.
