Ready to Face BYD, GWM Shows Off Teaser of Supercar Capable of Challenging Yangwang U9

JAKARTA – Yangwang, a luxury electric car brand owned by BYD, is now ready to enter the European market after achieving success in China. However, another major Chinese manufacturer, Great Wall Motor (GWM), has stated that it is ready to compete with BYD in this market.

Today, CarNewschina reported, GWM Chairman Wei Jianjun shared the first teaser photo of the company's long-awaited first supercar. This luxury vehicle, which is rumored to feature a plug-in hybrid system powered by a self-developed 4.0-liter V8 engine, is expected to be a strong competitor to BYD's Yangwang U9, with a price tag also exceeding 1 million yuan (approximately Rp2.2 billion).

In the photo posted by Wei Jianjun on his official Weibo account, taken to coincide with GWM's 35th anniversary, the chairman and company executives are seen posing in front of the still-covered silhouette of the supercar. However, it is clear that the vehicle has a relatively large and long body, with a sloping hood, a low beltline, and wide fenders. Large air vents in front of the rear fenders suggest the engine will likely be located at the rear.

GWM has been working on this supercar project since 2021. Meanwhile, the 4.0-liter V8 engine, developed by GWM, was officially unveiled at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show last April and will be an integral part of the supercar's plug-in hybrid powertrain. Further specification details have not yet been announced.

The arrival of this GWM supercar will certainly heat up competition in the high-performance vehicle segment in China. The Yangwang U9, an electric sports car from BYD with four electric motors producing 1,287 hp and 1,680 Nm, has recorded cumulative sales of 160 units from September 2024 to June 2025. With a starting price of 1,680,000 yuan, the Yangwang U9 sets a benchmark for GWM to surpass.

The official launch and full details of GWM's first supercar have not yet been announced.
