The United Nations Calls For Safe And Sustainable Distribution Of Aid During The Crisis Of Starvation In Gaza Worsens
JAKARTA - The United Nations has again firmly called for pressure to send safe and sustainable humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, warning of a sharp increase in severe malnutrition amid ongoing conflict and evacuation in the Palestinian enclave.
Speaking at a press conference Monday evening UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said, "In the midst of bombings, evacuations and destruction in Gaza, worrying reports continue to emerge about individuals suffering from acute malnutrition arriving at medical facilities in very poor health conditions," WAFA reported July 22.
UN agencies operating in Gaza have warned that living conditions in the region are barely habitable, stressing the need to protect civilians and ensuring uninterrupted humanitarian access to more than two million people facing the threat of starvation.
Dujarric noted that about 87.7 percent of Gaza's territory is now under evacuation orders or designated as an evacuation zone, effectively trapping about 2.1 million people in fragmented areas with little or no access to critical services.
Meanwhile, more than 1.3 million people desperately need shelter and basic supplies, he added, due to extreme weather conditions, high humidity, population density, and repeated demolition of temporary shelters and plastic tents continue to worsen the already concerning humanitarian situation.
