Wrath Of Man, Guy Ritchie And Jason Statham's Fourth Collaboration
JAKARTA - Wrath of Man focuses on H (Jason Statham), a cold and mysterious stranger, employed by a cash truck company that is responsible for moving hundreds of millions of dollars around Los Angeles every week.
One day, the truck is stuck at gunpoint and H alone tackles the robbers, displaying advanced combat skills and training.
However, secretly, H goes after the people who killed his son in a similar robbery, and plans to use his new position to set a trap for every would-be muggle in town until he finds his son's killer.
The film is based on the 2004 French film Cash Truck by Nicolas Boukhrief. In his 2021 adaptation, veteran director Guy Ritchie is directing the film from a script he co-authored with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies.
This is Ritchie's fourth collaboration with lead actor Jason Statham, after Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), Snatch (2000), and Revolver (2005).
The film opens immediately with a series of action-packed scenes that make the audience even reluctant to move to justify their sitting position. Combined with cool color tones, this film gives off a tense and dark atmosphere.
The color tones chosen are cool tones like grays, blacks, and blues - creating an eerie feel.
The collaboration between the director and Statham, which has been repeated many times, seems to make the film run so smoothly. Ritchie, who has a familiar non-linear narrative storytelling style and visuals, is able to make the audience feel involved with the main character, H.
The cold and mysterious H is employed by a trucking company in LA. From time to time, he began demonstrating certain tactics suggesting he was a highly skilled agent prior to being hired by the company.
Even though it is centered on a character who is so cold - even impressed "one dimension", Statham who is famous through his roles in thriller / action films once again shows an interesting appearance to behold.
Besides Statham, Holt McCallany, Jeffrey Donovan, Josh Hartnett, Laz Alonso, Raúl Castillo, DeObia Oparei, Eddie Marsan, and Scott Eastwood were also present in this film.
The presence of other supporting characters who are more relaxed can also compensate for H's serious side and make the audience chuckle occasionally with jokes and dynamics between the characters.
Turning to the side of the story, the combination of the choice of color nuances and characterizations with the style of the director who puts forward the side of the story, has led to the participation of the audience to follow the storyline of H, which was opened up like a scattered puzzle here and there.
Still talking about storytelling, Wrath of Man has a plot and a perspective that is quite unique. It's as if all the decisions, even the failures of H and the other supporting plays, have a specific purpose which will eventually be concluded at the end of the film. Even though there are some elements of the story that feel a little familiar, it seems that this film is still well executed.
What's interesting about action / thriller / crime / heist films, you could say it's not because of the stolen valuables. Apart from the story and series of action scenes, what makes this genre film memorable is how it is able to bring the audience to feel and weigh the risks and consequences of this - from the team, the plan, to the execution.
Although focusing on H, the audience is also invited to see other perspectives from other motifs and characters, combined with the main theme that is often played to show something scary will happen and can not be predicted.
The audience will also be spoiled a lot with the action-packed adventure H which has a secret motive and purpose.
It is inevitable that the visuals - from the acts and action scenes, the smooth CGI, to the color grading is very pleasing to the eye. With complementary audio such as explosions, gunfire, and several choices of theme songs and scoring that are placed in the right scene, watching it on the big screen feels like the right choice to enjoy all the tense scenes that are presented.
Another interesting thing about Wrath of Man, is that the film feels "separated" by several "chapters" like "chapters" in a reading book. The choice of the title of the chapter is not without reason. If listened carefully, the audience will understand why the title decision was taken in such a way.
With an entertaining action sequence, coupled with an interesting story premise and conflict that is not too dizzy, makes this film so fun to watch.
Overall, Wrath of Man is able to invite the audience to join in listening, connect one mystery to another, and open a new side about humans.
With the dynamics between the main characters, coupled with the beautiful visuals full of action, add to the aesthetic side of the film and it feels so suitable to be watched on the big screen.
