Starting August 1, Pasundan Train Changes The New Generation Economic Train

JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI will operate the New Generation Economic Train facilities on the Kiaracondong-Surabaya Gubeng (pp) connection Pasundan Train starting August 1, 2025.

KAI Vice President Public Relations Anne Purba said this upgrade answers customers' expectations of increasing convenience in the economy class.

Furthermore, Anne said the upright chair and the sitting position face to face are now abandoned. Instead, passengers will enjoy a train-directed captain seat, with a relieved leg room and an ergonomic seat design on the New Generation Economic train.

"The increase in the comfort of the Pasundan train is the fruit of the real work of Insan KAI at Balai Yasa Manggarai, which has succeeded in modifying the economic train to be more modern and ergonomic," he said in an official statement, Sunday, July 20.

Anne explained that the New Generation Economic train has a capacity of 72 seats per train, less than the previous 80 seats.

"This reduction actually provides optimal space and seating convenience, especially for long-distance travel," he explained.

The Pasundan train is now joining the ranks of trains that have used the New Generation modification facilities made by Balai Yasa Manggarai, such as:

As of July 2, 2025, Balai Yasa Manggarai has modified 93 units of the New Generation Economic train, which strengthens the role of KAI care units in modernizing facilities in-house and supporting the independence of the national railway industry.

In addition to internal modifications, KAI also runs a program to procure 612 Stainless Steel New Generation units from PT INKA (Persero) worth IDR 14.87 trillion until 2026.

Of that amount, continued Anne, Rp5.5 trillion was focused on the series of SS New Generation, as a form of expanding the use of domestic products and increasing TKDN.

"This large investment not only updates the facilities, but also prepares operational readiness to deal with the growth of passenger and freight transportation," said Anne.
