Lack Of Funds, UNHCR Stops Relocation Of Refugees From Chad-South Sudan

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was forced to temporarily suspend the process of relocating refugees from vulnerable areas in Chad and South Sudan to safer places due to lack of funds.

The captivity forced UNHCR to stop moving newcomers from the border area to safer locations, such as in Chad and South Sudan, resulting in thousands of people now stranded in remote areas, said UNHCR's official statement quoted by ANTARA from Sputnik-OANA, Friday, July 18.

As many as 75 percent of UNHCR-backed rehabilitation centers for women and girls, including victims of sexual violence, have been closed due to budget constraints.

As a result, up to 80,000 women and refugee girls no longer have access to health services, psychological support, legal assistance, or material assistance.

The United States is the largest contributor to the United Nations' routine budget, with a portion of 22 percent.

Based on UN data as of January, the US should pay USD 2.8 billion (approximately IDR 45 trillion), consisting of USD 1.5 billion (approximately IDR 24 trillion) for a routine organizational budget and the rest for peacekeeping operations and international court budgets.

On May 2, 2025, in the draft budget for the fiscal year 2026, US President Donald Trump proposed discontinuing total funding for UN peacekeeper operations, which he deems ineffective and burdening the US too much financially.

Trump also proposed discontinuing most mandatory contributions and all voluntary contributions to various agencies under the United Nations, including WHO, UNESCO, and the routine budget.
